Key Purpose

The Cabling Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing cable infrastructure and related equipment to ensure reliable connectivity across Discovery’s IT environment. This role supports data centres, workstations, and telecommunication systems by performing structured cabling, troubleshooting network issues, and ensuring compliance with safety standards. By delivering efficient technical support and maintaining high-quality installations, the Cabling Technician enables seamless operations and contributes to Discovery’s mission of enhancing and protecting lives.

 

Areas of responsibility may include but not limited to:

 

  • Installing, maintaining, and repairing cable infrastructure.
  • Preforming maintenance on existing cabling systems.
  • Testing newly installed or relocated cables according to company standards.
  • Identifying and removing redundant cabling & equipment.
  • Installing of internet technology devices.
  • Troubleshooting issues with cable network.
  • Installing Data Centre Racks.
  • Installing of cable support structures (cable racks, cable ducts, RJ45).
  • Ensuring all cables are neatly secured and bundled according to safety regulations.

 

Personal Attributes and Skills

 

  • Strong knowledge of copper cabling principles and Copper cabling technology.
  • Strong knowledge of Fiber cabling principles and Fiber cabling technology.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in various wiring, configurations and terminations, as well as possess technical skills and knowledge of telecommunications industry and installations, including voice, data structured cabling systems.
  • Ability to install routers and network switches.
  • Ability to work in cramped spaces.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to diagnose, troubleshoot and fix any problems that may arise.
  • Be able to effectively prioritize tasks and complete them in good time applying planning and forward-thinking skills.
  • Ability to work well both independently and as per of a professional team.
  • Ability to lift heavy equipment, work at heights and identify independent colours
  • Knowledge of Discovery Group’s IT Infrastructure environment & Office 365 Apps

 

 

Education and Experience

  • Matric
  • Post School Cabling qualifications, Network +, A+, Server +, Fiber and copper certification, CDCP, CDCS,CDCE, MCSE
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience as a cable technician
