About The Discovery Health - Global Team
Discovery Health - Global is a subsidiary of Discovery Health and strategically extends Discovery’s reach through delivery in key business activities:
Provision of Health insurance products underpinned by Vitality and Shared value principles, targeting growth across the African continent. Products are currently sold in: DRC, Mozambique, Kenya, Zambia, Ghana, Nigeria and Tanzania.
Key Purpose
To take full ownership of reporting and data management across Discovery Health Global’s health insurance portfolios. The role is accountable for integrating and governing datasets from internal and external sources, and for delivering accurate, timely, decision‑useful reporting to internal and external stakeholders including but not limited to management, clients, and international brokers. Due to the startup-nature of the business, the role requires someone who is comfortable operating in ambiguity, building structure where needed, and improving processes iteratively while delivering reliably.
Key Outputs
- Data Management (Internal and External Sources)
- Own the end-to-end data lifecycle for reporting: acquisition, validation, transformation, reconciliation, and publication into reporting-ready datasets.
- Integrate data from multiple sources, including: internal systems and reporting repositories; partner insurer data extracts; claims administrators/TPAs and third-party service providers; provider/network/vendor files (where applicable); and client-provided datasets and broker-required templates/extracts.
- Develop, implement and maintain strong data governance and controls (completeness checks, reconciliations, reasonability checks, movement/variance analysis, exception logging).
- Maintain documentation: data dictionaries, metric definitions, mapping logic, transformation rules and calculation specifications.
- Identify recurring data quality issues and drive resolution with internal stakeholders and external partners.
- Performance Reporting Ownership (Senior Management, Clients, Brokers)
- Own the production and delivery of recurring and ad-hoc reporting outputs to senior management (executive-level portfolio performance, trends, risks and drivers), clients (claims, utilisation, trends and drivers), and international brokers (standardised reporting packs aligned to broker formats, definitions and timelines).
- Manage reporting calendars, delivery timelines, distribution lists, version control, and governance.
- Ensure reporting is consistent, “finance-grade” (trusted, controlled, auditable), and appropriately explained for the audience.
- Drive productionisation and standardisation of reporting packs and definitions across markets/partners to improve consistency and reduce rework.
- SQL Development and Data Transformation
- Write and maintain complex SQL queries to extract, join, transform and reconcile large datasets across multiple systems and varying structures.
- Build efficient datasets for downstream reporting (Power BI semantic models, Excel packs, and ad-hoc analysis).
- Ensure query logic is maintainable and aligned to agreed definitions and reporting standards.
- Power BI Development and Dashboard Ownership
- Design, build and maintain Power BI dashboards for internal and (where relevant) external consumption.
- Own data modelling, DAX measures, refresh processes, and performance optimisation.
- Maintain appropriate access control and separation of internal vs external-facing reporting.
- Advanced Excel Reporting and Automation
- Produce high-quality Excel reporting packs and analytical tools that are accurate, well-structured and easy to audit.
- Use advanced Excel capabilities effectively (e.g., Power Query/Power Pivot, robust modelling, automation techniques).
- Reduce manual effort and operational risk by improving templates and automating repetitive reporting steps.
- Senior Stakeholder Engagement and Independent Delivery
- Operate independently, prioritising and delivering consistently with minimal supervision.
- Work closely with senior stakeholders (including the Managing Executive: Actuarial, Head of Finance, Systems Leads, and other cross-functional leaders).
- Translate technical outputs into clear, business-relevant insights suitable for executive and external audiences.
- Confidently drive clarity on requirements, definitions, timelines and exceptions.
