About the Medical Team

The medical team is a small unit that offers specialized advice in the insurance medical field to multiple business units in Discovery Life.

Key Purpose

To provide medical support and research for the Technical Marketing, Product Development and Legal teams as well as medical support, research and training for underwriting and claims for Discovery Life, Discovery Group and the Smart Service team.

Areas of responsibility may include but not limited to

• Medical evaluation of risk for underwriting to minimize the risk to Discovery Life and to improve profits.
• Medical evaluation of claims to ensure validity, to keep the actual versus expected claims ratio at an acceptable level.
• Medical and technical support and guidance to Smart Services to optimize customer service and to facilitate the activation of policies.
• To develop standards and guidelines and forms to ensure accurate evidence-based underwriting and to ensure competitiveness whilst being profitable.
• Technical marketing / product development – providing medical expertise to answer queries and to assist with product development by providing a medical service to the distribution team and product actuaries.
• To provide medical expertise to the legal team for ombudsman and court cases to limit adverse ombudsman findings and judgements against Discovery Life.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential:

• Completion of medical studies (MBChB. or equivalent), internship and community service.
• One to Two year’s work experience as a qualified doctor
• Full, active registration with the HPCSA as a medical practitioner

Advantageous:

• Post graduate studies in Occupational Health
• Post graduate studies in Insurance Medicine
• Experience in the long-term insurance industry field
