Job Purpose
The Finance Manager (CA) will oversee all statutory financial reporting and taxation matters, ensuring compliance with applicable legislation and regulations. This role involves planning, directing, managing, and controlling the company’s financial activities, including tax, governance, and operations. The Finance Manager will lead the finance function, defining financial control, reporting, and risk management. Collaborating closely with the Head of Capital, Strategic Financial Planning & Financial Analysis. The Finance Manager will drive growth and profitability in alignment with the organization’s local and global strategic plans. Additionally, this role will focus on continuous investment in human capital development and provide specialist support to the Bank Executive for related projects.
Areas of responsibility may include but are not limited to
IFRS and Financial Reporting Matters:
- Compliance with all financial regulations. (IFRS, Companies Act, Banking Act)
- Preparation of all statutory financial reporting and interpretation.
- Report on the financial position and performance of the Bank in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
- Liaise and integrate with the Discovery Group Finance function.
- Stay abreast of financial reporting developments as well as South Africa’s implementation thereof.
- Preparation of monthly accounts. Specific areas of responsibility include but are not limited to:
- Deferred tax, impairments, amortisation runs, depreciation runs
- Accounting for corporate transactions
- Expected credit losses in accordance with IFRS 9
- Prepare the Annual Financial Statements, including but not limited to:
- Ensure that the monthly management accounts are in line with the accounting policies
- Manage and review all reconciliations and supporting schedules that support the preparation of financial statements
- Preparation of non-financial information that accompanies the financial statements (e.g. Audit and Compliance Committee report)
- Reporting, filing and submission of financial results to various stakeholders, including but limited to:
- Preparation of financial packs for Discovery Group (OneStream consolidation);
- Financial Services Conduct Authority (FSCA);
- National Credit Regulator (Form 40 Returns);
- CIPC filings using the XBRL Taxonomy;
- appropriately translating reporting into the stakeholders required format.
Taxation Matters
- Adherence to taxation legislation and directives
- Manage taxation matters including responding to SARS enquiries
- Liaise and integrate with the Discovery Group Tax function
- Maintain controls (system and manual) and governance, including policies over VAT environment, end-to-end
- Manage IT3B, IT35 & AEOI related submissions and sign off
- Take responsibility over all tax related submissions including Income Tax, VAT, PAYE, SDL, UIF and COIDA submissions
- Stay abreast of taxation developments represent Discovery on tax and regulatory industry working groups.
Product Development
- Work with banking product teams and provide guidance on accounting and taxation features of products, and ensure compliance from design to implementation
- Monitor competitors and establish appropriate insightful comparisons.
Audit
- Liaise with the external auditors.
- Work closely with the Internal Audit and Legal and Compliance functions.
Education and Experience
-
- CA (SA) or APC completed and unregistered
- Articles with registered audit Firm
- 0 – 2 post articles experience
- Exposure to a highly pressurized, complex environment
- An unblemished career record and sound knowledge of IFRS, treasury, tax, internal audit, legal, payroll and financial and performance reporting
- Financial Services Experience (preferred)
Technical Skills or Knowledge

- Sound knowledge of banking within a finance and taxation framework, the applicable regulatory environment, key regulatory regimes, best practice methodologies and emerging finance and taxation issues.
- Financial, Taxation and risk management skills with the ability to navigate with agility between accounting, legal and tax views.
- Deeply trustworthy, reliable and honest with an entrepreneurial bias.
- Risk averse.
- Impeccable attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines whilst always maintaining a healthy lifestyle balance.
- Advanced knowledge of Excel, Powerpoint and Power BI
