Discovery Health Care Services (DHCS) is establishing an Occupational Health Practitioner (OHP) Locum Talent Pool to support our growing network of onsite and client-based occupational health services. We invite experienced and passionate Occupational Health Practitioners to register their interest for future locum opportunities across our national client footprint

 

 

About the Opportunity 

As a Locum Occupational Health Practitioner, you will play a critical role in protecting and promoting employee health and wellbeing while supporting compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), applicable regulations, and best-practice occupational health standards.

 

This role offers flexible locum opportunities across various industries and workplace environments, enabling you to contribute to proactive workplace health management and risk reduction initiatives.

 

Key Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to 

 

Occupational Health Assessments and Medical Surveillance 

  • Conduct pre-employment, baseline, periodic, transfer, exit, and return-to-work medical assessments.
  • Perform medical surveillance in accordance with identified workplace hazards and regulatory requirements.
  • Assess employee fitness for work and provide recommendations regarding workplace accommodations where necessary.
  • Conduct biological monitoring and screening activities as required by occupational risk exposure profiles.
  • Identify and monitor occupational diseases and work-related health conditions

 

OHSA Compliance and Risk Management 

  • Ensure occupational health services comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and associated regulations.
  • Support employers in identifying, assessing, and managing occupational health risks.
  • Participate in workplace risk assessments and hazard identification processes.
  • Monitor compliance with occupational health programmes and recommend corrective actions when required.
  • Maintain awareness of current occupational health legislation, industry standards, and best practices

 

Injury on Duty and Case Management  

  • Assess and manage occupational injuries and illnesses.
  • Facilitate appropriate treatment, referral, rehabilitation, and return-to-work processes.
  • Support investigation of occupational health-related incidents and identify preventative interventions.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to optimise employee recovery and workplace reintegration

 

Workplace Health Promotion and Prevention

  • Design and implement workplace wellness and health promotion initiatives.
  • Conduct employee health education sessions relating to workplace risks and preventative health practices.
  • Promote healthy lifestyle interventions that support workforce wellbeing and productivity.
  • Support vaccination campaigns and communicable disease management programmes where applicable

 

Clinical Governance and Quality Assurance

  • Maintain accurate, confidential, and legally compliant occupational health records.
  • Ensure all clinical documentation meets professional, legal, and organisational standards.
  • Support occupational health audits, quality improvement initiatives, and compliance reviews.
  • Participate in clinical governance activities and continuous professional development

 

Reporting and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Compile and submit occupational health reports, trend analyses, and medical surveillance reports.
  • Provide meaningful health data insights and recommendations to support organisational decision-making.
  • Liaise effectively with employees, employers, management teams, healthcare providers, and regulatory stakeholders.
  • Support client reporting requirements while maintaining medical confidentiality standards

 

Minimum requirements

Qualifications and registration

  • MBChB qualification.
  • Current registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Independent Medical Practitioner.
  • Postgraduate qualification in Occupational Medicine (Diploma in Occupational Medicine (DOM), Postgraduate Diploma in Occupational Health, MMed Occupational Medicine, or equivalent) will be advantageous.
  • Valid Dispensing Licence and Permit.
  • Current Professional Indemnity Insurance.

Experience

  • Minimum 3 to 5 years' experience as a practising General Practitioner or Medical Practitioner.
  • Minimum 2 years' experience in Occupational Health and Occupational Medicine environments.
  • Experience conducting fitness-for-work assessments and occupational medical surveillance programmes.
  • Experience in the diagnosis and management of occupational injuries, occupational diseases, and workplace-related health risks.
  • Experience with Injury on Duty (IOD), Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases (COID) processes, and return-to-work programmes.
  • Experience working within corporate, industrial, manufacturing, mining, logistics, healthcare, or similar occupational health settings.
  • Sound understanding and practical application of Occupational Health and Safety legislation and regulations

 

Preferred Qualifications and Certifications

  • Audiometry certification.
  • Spirometry certification.
  • Training in travel medicine and workplace wellness programmes.
  • Experience in Hazardous Chemical Agents (HCA) surveillance programmes.
  • Experience in Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) programmes.
  • Experience with occupational risk assessments and workplace exposure management

 

Technical skills and knowledge

  • Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and associated regulations.
  • Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (COIDA).
  • Medical surveillance programme design, implementation, and oversight.
  • Fitness-for-work and return-to-work assessments.
  • Occupational disease diagnosis and management.
  • Workplace hazard identification and risk assessment.
  • Clinical governance and occupational health compliance auditing.
  • Occupational health data analysis and reporting.
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and Teams.
  • Experience with occupational health and electronic medical record systems
