Key Purpose

The DTI Underwriter will be responsible for all aspects of travel insurance underwriting, including but not limited to new business quotes and renewals, policy acceptance / rejection, pricing (within their allocated authority) and portfolio analysis, the individual will also be responsible for the administration of the corporate travel insurance business and binder oversight.

 

The individuals will also need to provide claims oversight on the travel insurance business.   

 

Areas of responsibility may include but are not limited to

Underwriting:

  • Portfolio management, including identifying adverse trends and providing/implementing corrective actions.
  • Development and maintenance of policy literature ensure exposure is adequately managed.
  • Ensure that the exposure is adequality managed via the reinsurance treaties renewal process.
  • Upward communication of portfolio performance, including key KPI’s and performance of key accounts
  • Engaging the respective compliance and risk teams to ensure processes and policies are in line with current legislation.
  • Renewal of key accounts.

 

Corporate Travel Oversight:

  • Quoting and binding new CTI business within allocated underwriting authority.
  • Preparation of underwriting referrals for quotes that fall outside of underwriting authority.
  • Preparation of terms and policy endorsements when required.
  • Broker and binder onboarding as well as oversight
  • Driving the renewal process ensuring that the business retained meets the targeted Loss Ratio and other key metrics.
  • Administration of the corporate travel system
  • Working on the corporate booking systems to ensure premium is booked.
  • Liaising with finance on commissions and fees payable

 

Reinsurance:

  • Treaty review
  • Treaty renewal
  • Engaging Reinsurance for dispensation

 

Travel Insurance Claims oversight:

  • Providing guidance for claim assessments 
  • Assisting with client claim queries when escalated to prevent escalation to the Insurance ombud

Education and Experience

Education:

  • Matric/Grade 12           
  • FAIS Complaint
  • RE5
  • Continuous Professional Development (CPD)

 

 Minimum Experience:              

  • Technical knowledge and understanding of short-term insurance
  • 2 – 3 years experience working within the short-term insurance industry
  • Minimum 1 – 2 years underwriting experience
